“Each lesson plan should have its roots in the previous
lesson and its branches and leaves in the next one..”

Learning is individual process. It is related to the
behavioral changes of an individual. Each person learns according to his or her
ability of learning. But human beings are also a social animal. Their all
activities are correlated to the group in which they live. Group process such
as competition, conflict, cooperation, exchange, assimilation, accommodation
etc. has positive effects on learning.

In my class there are 40 to 50 students. Teaching a large
class always is a matter of discussion. There are new discoveries and new
formula experimented on them. The main problem is of lack of two way
interaction, it becomes difficult for teacher to interact with the students.
Students are passive and teacher acts as a leader. Teacher can not evaluate
students personally, so no chance of feedback.. There is always lack of
interpersonal relationship. The positive point is that there is great
motivation in between them because there is more competition, cooperation and
recognition. At this situation mostly we use techniques like lecture method,
demonstration method, seminar, panel discussion, exploration, group works,
project works etc.

With the advent of the internet age, all aspects of society
have been influenced, including education. Computers and the internet are used
in all levels of education, excluding perhaps preschool and grade school here
in
Nepal. But
with more computers like educational toys such as the ‘Leap Frog’, even younger
students are learning with computers. It has played vital role in large class
teaching. Some how internet and multimedia made teaching of large class easier.
There is an entire ‘sub-industry’ of education called ‘online education’.
Online education is done primarily through the usage of computers and the
internet where the student does the class work from home. A large number of
groups are benefited by this. Social networking sites like My Space, Twitter,
Face Book, E-baby etc. can also be used for educational purposes, as some
instructors integrate aspects of those sites into their lessons. In addition to
books, videos and other materials, self-directed learners often use computers
to continue their education outside of, or in addition to traditional
facilities. Many instructors use internet to administer assignment, keep track
of grades or offer online instructions. Most of the teacher use online
resources in their daily lessons. Teacher’s
Blog, Web Quest, Rubrics have also made the project works for large classes
more structured and organized.
This week was interesting to me. I learned many things. I
learned new ways of teaching in large classes like here in Nepal.
Making Power Point Presentation was totally new for me. I found it interesting
in presenting the lesson in a new and interesting way. It has capacity to
capture audience’s interest and attention. The introductory and plenary
elements are planed for the students to be focused on their work and finally
checked for their understanding of what has been learned. A well chosen visual
aid makes a sticking opening to a lesson and can galvanize a class.
As a whole the week was wonderful….
Hello Aparna Gupta ,
ReplyDeleteHow nice are you and your students. I am happy that the topic of the week matches your needs as you teach a large class. You use more techniques that what we dealt with through the week. I would like you to tell me how can you apply compositions with this large number of students.
Mustafa
Thank you Mustafa....
ReplyDeleteWe have always dealt with similar number of students. It is common in Nepal. So we face less problems and keep on doing new new experiments on them. As I said when there is large number of students there is more cooperation, competition, exchange, assimilation, accommodation etc. and these have positive effect on learning. We have class monitors, bench monitors and group monitors, who help in class work and home work checking. This year we are experimenting modern technology in teaching.

Hi Aparna!
ReplyDeleteHope you are enjoying your large classes. As you said that human beings are social animal and they learn more when they work in groups. I was just thinking as how can I replace lecture with activities for my large class and I found out a solution with the help of Robert, which is the idea of Flipped-Classrooms. You should also visit this link and I hope that it might be a big change, here is the link:

ReplyDeleteHi Aparna,
ReplyDeletesorry for my late comment to your post about week 6, but today I arrived back home from hospital. Your blog was very interesting to read and I like most the quotation you used at the beginning of your blog reflection:
“Each lesson plan should have its roots in the previous lesson and its branches and leaves in the next one..”
It is truly an individual process that each learner has to develope himself/herself but to guide along all your students (you mentioned up to 50) in their individual learning process is a real challenge.
I am sure, you are aware of your responsibility as a guiding teacher and very often it is far more than teaching - it's simply life education. I fully pay respect to you and your daily work and I am sure your students experience the above mentioned roots - branches - leaves when you introduce them to new technologically enhanced lessons with blogs, webquests, rubrics and power points.
best of success
Brigitte
Thank you Everybody.....
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Aurangzeb for the link... I found it very much helpful..
Dear Ricardo,
ReplyDeleteWe are in pair now and have to give feed backs to each other so that we can make our project work the best.
