Week 2

The Pulitzer Prize winning writer John Tracy Kidder has stated that "Most teachers have little control over school policy or curriculum or choice of texts or special placement of students, but most have a great deal of autonomy inside the classroom. To a degree shared by only a few other occupations, such as police work, public education rests precariously on the skill and virtue of the people at the bottom of the institutional pyramid"
Teachers and students tend to have a conflictual relationship. Considering the fact that students spend approximately six to seven hours a day in school under the supervision of their teachers, the attitudes reflected in the classrooms prevent those hours from being productive. Lack of good communication, respect in classroom and interest to teach/learn is not the right kind of atmosphere for imparting knowledge.
Students are so happy to see Computer in the class

With good communication and certain code of conduct and discipline within the periphery of the class room, a teacher can influence students on a great level. Every student looks for an ideal teacher, someone they can look up to but the stereotypical notion that teachers are supposed to be strict and has restricted creative communication in Nepal's schools and colleges.

This week of my web skills course taught me how to make my students curious and do their work with the same curiosity. I did not know that there are so many search engines other than Google and Wikipedia. It was interesting and wonderful experience to me. I explored many search engines and found them useful. About.com and Ask.com are the storage of many useful materials that can be used in the language class room teaching. I brought computer to my language classroom and made them introduced with these search engines. I shared the links to my students and found them curious in doing their project works.

This week I too started my project work. I stared sampling population and analyzing problems. I am too very curious about my research work. The wonderful thing is that this all is for a change. A change in the classroom environment. Introducing modern technology in the existing classroom teaching/learning process. Adding something new in our syllabus and enjoying the all process with our students.......

  3. Hi Aparna,
I attentively read your blog and like the part with the conflicting relationship amongst learners and teachers. When I started teaching teenagers, adults and students 50+ I thought that I wasn't a good teacher and somethimes had difficulties to please all my students. Now I would say, I had to learn my lesson and it is not the most important to complete a week's syllabus. There is so much interpersonal interaction, which cannot be measured by any system, but this interpersonal experience is 'LiveLongLearning' which is the most important for young learners, to learn how to survive. And for adults, how to deal with new situations. Sometimes I reflect on the previous month to analyse what I was taught by my students, and what my students could improve significantly. Very often I realised, that if there were a lot of interpersonal issues, soft skills or communication competence that changed positively, I knew I had succeeded. Teaching & learning is a rocky road, no matter with or without internet technology in class, the people stay the same - it is a challenging relationship! Good luck for your project!

  4. Thank you Brigitte.....
I also teach English to adult learners in a open school. I is quite hard to please adult learners. They come back to studies with different expectation and ambitions. So, we have to deal with them according to their expectations. Most of them are here to learn the basic technology so that they can send emails to their children studying and working abroad. I know how hard you are working and I appreciate you hard work. Wish you too a very good luck for you project work.

  6. Hi Aparna: You were definitely busy week 2, and you were clearly thinking about how the material relates back to you and your context. This is the main goal of keeping a reflective blog, to enhance your learning experience. I love your quote as well. -Robert
